Iran’s Supreme Leader Outlaws the Teaching of Music

In a program called “No Child Left Enriched,” the Ayatollah of Iran has banned the teaching of music. Quickly, we must summon and deploy Kevin Bacon. From The Guardian:

“Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said today that music is “not compatible” with the values of the Islamic republic, and should not be practised or taught in the country.

In some of the most extreme comments by a senior regime figure since the 1979 revolution, Khamenei said: “Although music is halal, promoting and teaching it is not compatible with the highest values of the sacred regime of the Islamic Republic.”

Khamenei’s comments came in response to a request for a ruling by a 21-year-old follower of his, who was thinking of starting music lessons, but wanted to know if they were acceptable according to Islam, the semi-official Fars news agency reported. “It’s better that our dear youth spend their valuable time in learning science and essential and useful skills and fill their time with sport and healthy recreations instead of music,” he said.”

Whatta piece-a shit!

I deliver that comment from a vast bank of ignorance re: both Iran and Islamic values, but the music-slam in the third paragraph! This guy’s got a real turd in his punchbowl!

Republicans are the Party of Unemployment

Oh, no no no; I don’t mean that the Republicans are the party to support the unemployed. I (or, the guardian, more specifically) mean that the Republicans are the party to exploit the plight of the unemployed for political capital in the coming midterm election, and are currently working to build said base to increase said capital. From the dystopian times:

“From now until 2 November, the Republican party will be the party of unemployment. The logic is straightforward: the more people who are unemployed on election day, the better the prospects for Republicans in the fall election. They expect, with good cause, that voters will hold the Democrats responsible for the state of the economy. Therefore, anything that the Republicans can do to make the economy worse between now and then will help their election prospects.

While it may be bad taste to accuse a major national political party of deliberately wanting to throw people out of jobs, there is no other plausible explanation for the Republicans’ behaviour. They have balked at supporting nearly every bill that had any serious hope of creating or keeping jobs, most recently filibustering on bills that provided aid to state and local governments and extending unemployment benefits. The result of the Republicans’ actions, unless they are reversed quickly, is that hundreds of thousands more workers will be thrown out of work by the mid-terms.”

Requisite Viewing: Yet Another Superb Adam Curtis Documentary

When Adam Curtis hits, he hits hard. I used to think David Attenborough was the voice of my British conscience, but I’ve found a new demure man to whisper sweet, sweet axioms to send shivers down the spine. Sorry, Davey, but nature is booooooooring compared to the contemptible machinations of mankind’s rulers. Hell, Mr. Curtis is even getting a coveted Man Hero award (note to blog: introduce a Woman Hero category, for Harriet Tubman’s sake!).

For those who need a pingback, holla One and holla Two.

Food Prices to Rise 40% Over Next Decade

Here’s a nice pick-me-up from the Guardian, citing a recent UN report that reflects the subject above. Time to build a greenhouse, by the looks of it.

The forecasts are for wheat and coarse grain prices over the next 10 years to be between 15% and 40% higher in real terms, once adjusted for inflation, than their average levels during the 1997-2006 period, the decade before the price spike of 2007-08. Real prices for vegetable oils are expected to be more than 40% higher and dairy prices are projected to be between 16-45% higher. But rises in livestock prices are expected to be less marked, although world demand for meat is climbing faster than for other farm commodities on the back of rising wealth for some sections of the population in emerging economies.

Although the report sees production increasing to meet demand, it warns that recent price spikes and the economic crisis have contributed to a rise in hunger and food insecurity. About 1 billion people are now estimated to be undernourished, it said.”

It’s from 2004, but it’s more about the visual connections and less about the connectees (try and qualify that statement, whydoncha).

An Awful News Story

I’m not joking. It’s so awful, I’m only giving one sentence. From ABC News:

“An Army sergeant who served in Iraq for 15 months has been restricted to his Washington military base after being accused of waterboarding his 4-year-old daughter because she refused to recite her ABCs.”

Requisite Viewing

I’m not joking. Not one goddamn iota. This is huge. Comprehensive. Complete, cogent and real. By Adam Curtis (the brilliant documentarian who would later deliver The Power of Nightmares [future post alert!]), we are presented with a continuously informing tapestry of the means that those in power control the populace. This is not some Zeitgeist, Truther, hyperbolic nonsense – this is true and real history checking without political bias or party bend.

What’s striking is the pervasiveness of the Freud family throughout the entire epoch, starting with Grandpappy Cocaine Dream Fuck and moving onto Edward (who?) Bernays, all the way through to Michael Freud’s involvement in the United Kingdom political sphere. It’s a pretty obvious (and intentional) observation, but fuck if it doesn’t come together and make you consider one family’s, one ideal’s, permeance throughout it all, for better or for Freud.

Will California Become America’s First Failed State?

I thought that honor was already snagged by Alabama (hai-yo!). Just kidding, this is really awful. From the Guardian:

“But the state that was once held up as the epitome of the boundless opportunities of America has collapsed. From its politics to its economy to its environment and way of life, California is like a patient on life support. At the start of summer the state government was so deeply in debt that it began to issue IOUs instead of wages. Its unemployment rate has soared to more than 12%, the highest figure in 70 years. Desperate to pay off a crippling budget deficit, California is slashing spending in education and healthcare, laying off vast numbers of workers and forcing others to take unpaid leave. In a state made up of sprawling suburbs the collapse of the housing bubble has impoverished millions and kicked tens of thousands of families out of their homes. Its political system is locked in paralysis and the two-term rule of former movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger is seen as a disaster – his approval ratings having sunk to levels that would make George W Bush blush. The crisis is so deep that Professor Kevin Starr, who has written an acclaimed history of the state, recently declared: “California is on the verge of becoming the first failed state in America.”
